The NAT-TEST is a Japanese language proficiency test for people whose native language isn’t Japanese. It evaluates how well you can use Japanese in real reading, listening, and grammar situations — similar to the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
- It’s officially called 日本語NAT-TEST in Japan.
- The test is recognized internationally and used by language schools, universities, employers, and immigration authorities to measure Japanese ability.
- One of its big strengths is that it happens six times a year, so you can take it more often than the JLPT.
NAT Test Levels (5Q up to 1Q)
There are five levels you can take:
|
NAT Level |
JLPT Equivalent |
Skill Level |
|
5Q |
~ N5 |
Beginner — basic vocabulary, grammar, hiragana/kana. |
|
4Q |
~ N4 |
Elementary — simple conversation + grammar. |
|
3Q |
~ N3 |
Intermediate — more reading + listening. |
|
2Q |
~ N2 |
Upper intermediate — business/academic Japanese. |
|
1Q |
~ N1 |
Advanced — near-native professional use. |
You choose a level based on your current Japanese skills. Lower levels focus on basic vocabulary and listening, while higher levels test strong reading, grammar, vocabulary, and listening.
